Default text to speech

I want my app to speak letters, words, or both as they are typed. The problem is, using the following code, the letters or words are highlighted when spoken, so the next keystroke deletes what was typed.
Code:
        Select Case True
            'speak words only
Case _SpeakWords = True And _SpeakLetters = False
                If e.KeyChar = " " Or e.KeyChar = "{Enter}]" Then
Dim lastWord As String = rtbDoc.Text.Split(" ").Last
                    Vox.Speak(lastWord, SpeechVoiceSpeakFlags.SVSFDefault)
                End If
                'speak letters only
Case _SpeakLetters = True And _SpeakWords = False
                Vox.Speak(e.KeyChar, SpeechVoiceSpeakFlags.SVSFDefault)
                'speak letters and words
Case _SpeakLetters = True And _SpeakWords = True
                If e.KeyChar = " " Or e.KeyChar = "{Enter}" Then
Dim lastWord As String = rtbDoc.Text.Split(" ").Last
                    Vox.Speak(lastWord, SpeechVoiceSpeakFlags.SVSFDefault)
                Else
                    If Char.IsLetterOrDigit(e.KeyChar) Or Char.IsPunctuation(e.KeyChar) Then
                        Vox.Speak(e.KeyChar, SpeechVoiceSpeakFlags.SVSFDefault)
                    End If
                End If
        End Select
